Handwriting Focus: Focus on BEGINNING letter formation - letters that start with a line and letters that begin at 2:00

Friday 9/1 We will start our Simple Machines Unit

-Students will understand that machines help us do work.
-Students will understand that work is when force is applied to an object and it moves in the direction of the force 
Vocab:  
force- a push or a pull

History: 
-Students will locate Canada
-Students will identify important places and landforms in Canada 
-Students will locate Mexico
-Students will know the basic history of Mexico 
-Students will identify central America on a map and the countries in South America. 
-Students will identify the West Indies on a map and understand how they were named 
-Students will identify the continent of South America
-Students will describe important features of Brazil, Columbia, Venezuela, Suriname, Guyana, and French Guiana 
  

Math: 
-Relate "More than and "less than" to subtraction. Review comparison concepts in word problems
-Review mental math: Addition and subtraction of two digit numbers, no renaming 
-Students will practice solving word problems (addition and subtraction) 
-Students will add a 2 digit number to a number within 1,000 without renaming 
-Students will add 3 digit numbers without renaming - solve word problems

-Students will understand how a compass works and how to use one to navigate. 
-Students will have hands on experience exploring a magnet's magnetic field 
-Students will understand that a magnetic field is strongest at the poles 
-Students will be able to explain how magnets are used in everyday life 
Monday- Solar Eclipse 
The following info was taken from the green handout given Wed. 
If you would like to attend the Solar Eclipse viewing outside with your child, we will utilize the donated eye wear. Please follow the steps below on the morning of August 21st.
1. Arrive at 9:30 am to the MPR with your Driveline Number. Students will not be released for outside viewing without a driveline number entered into the system.
2. Administrators will page the classroom for your child to come down to the MPR and receive viewing glasses.
3. View the eclipse on the field and return to the MPR with your student when ready.
4. Students will return to class.

History: Assessment is paced out over two days. Scholars will start the assessment Wed., finishing Thurs. 
A study guide is going home Tues.
Concepts for test: Parts of a map (compass rose, scale, key, symbol), Cardinal Directions (NSEW), Landforms (coast, oasis, desert, prairie, valley), Locations (city, state, country, continent)  
Next Unit - starting Thursday: 
-Students will identify the three countries in North America 
-Students will identify important places and landforms in the united states (Washington DC, Appalachian Mountains, Rocky Mountains, Great Lakes, Mississippi River)
-Students will locate Canada 
-Students will identify important places and landforms in Canada (Provinces)

Week of 8/14/17



Classroom Decorum: 1. I allow students to remain in my classroom as long as they do not cause a problem for anyone else.
2. If they cause a problem, I will ask them to fix it.
3. If they can't or will not fix it, I will do something.
4. What I will do will depend on the situation.

-Spelling words start this week 30 word spelling test Friday
-Idiom: "Turn over a new leaf" 
Spelling homework Clarification/Directions:
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday Spelling Homework:  10 new words each day(Packet and separate small sheet with one day's 10 words = your copy / blank packet =student's)
In class, your child received direction and instruction with 10 new words.
The homework steps are: 
1. Parent: Say each word, then say it in a sentence, and then say the word again. 
2. Your child writes the word, and markings, as seen on your copy of words.
He/she does not include the rules they learned in class, as rules are only practiced in class. ----help your child make appropriate corrections, immediately, before moving on to the next word. 
3. When you complete all 10 words, your child will turn the next page of the packet so they cannot see the words they just wrote. 
4. ...Repeat this entire process 2 more times, so each word has been practiced a total of 3 times (PLEASE NOTE: The words are never to be copied) 
Thursday Spelling Homework: All 30 words 
1. Say each word, then say it in a sentence, and then say the word again.
2. Your child writes the word only, as seen on your copy. He/she does not include the markings (on Thursday) or rules they learned in class. 
---help your child make appropriate corrections, immediately, before moving on to the next word. 
3. Process is done once, so each of the 30 weekly words from M,T,Wed. has been practiced once.  

(Please make sure your child is not copying the words from this homework page, but you are reading them to your child.)

History: -Students will identify the seven continents and five oceans on a map and globe. -Students will recognize the connections between city, state, country, and continent
-Students will recognize the connections between city, state, country, and continent -Students will identify and define the following landforms: coast, valley, prairie, and desert, and oasis

Happy first full week of school!


What a beautiful, exciting day Friday was! Your child demonstrated such courage and friendship throughout the day. 
 The second grade scholars were attentive and respectful, learning many new routines and discussing classroom decorum, having a growth mindset, and actively looking for ways to be kind. My biggest hope is that your child understands "It is okay to make mistakes, that's the way we learn!" "It is okay not to know, it is not okay not to try!" Please email me if you have any concerns or questions about classroom expectations or routines. I greatly value strong communication with you as we partner this year.

Regarding Emails:

Second Grade Homework Clarification: 
20-30 minutes for homework + 20 minutes at home reading
= 40-55 minutes of overall homework time
Spalding- Daily
Math- Daily
Writing or Grammar- 1-2x weekly
History or Science- 1-2x weekly
Latin- weekly

Orange Folder: Take home daily 
Homework will be coming home each evening in your child's orange folder.
Agendas will be checked daily. Please sign the agenda to show your child read for 20 minutes. I placed a sticker showing where to sign Friday.

Black folder:
Graded work will be returned in the Friday folder (the black folder) There is a sheet to date and sign when you look over your child's work.
 *FYI Please note: often times your child will be completing their classwork within a composition notebook. These are not sent home weekly. Example: This week much of our grammar and science lessons and learning will be done within and gluing student-made reference pages or activities into the subject notebooks.

Water bottles:  
Please be sure to label your child's water and echo the importance of staying well hydrated throughout the day! Our lunch is early in the day, so we do have an afternoon snack around 1:00.

    -Key vocab:
    force: a push or a pull
    magnet: an object that attracts certain materials
    magnetism: an invisible force that attracts some materials
    magnetic: an object that is attracted to a magnet
    lodestone: naturally occurring magnetic rocks

    History: 
    -Students will recognize that different types of maps serve different purposes
    -Students will interpret political and physical maps using titles, compass rose, and scales.
    -Students will be able to identify and locate physical and human features on a map (ocean, continent, river, lake, mountain range, coast, 4 hemispheres, equator, prime meridian, poles)

    Welome to Second Grade!

    Hello Everyone!

    Welcome to Second Grade! I am so excited to have you in my class this year!

    My name is Ms. Castillo. I will be the Lead Teacher in 2A this year. We are so lucky to have Miss Six as our Assistant Teacher. She is an incredible asset to our class.

    Every Monday this blog will be updated with the week's highlights. Look here to see what is going on with our class, for announcements and reminders, or to see pictures of all of the fun and learning we are doing in 2A.
